Modified oil monotype and mixed media, this is a suite of works on themes of history, ethnicity and culture situated in a particular place, Sicily, and the slope of the volcano, Mount Etna. Verses from Salvatore Quasimodo's poetry interlace diptych halves. These pieces began as oil monotypes, and then were altered in oil, gouache, graphite and colored pencil. The primary visual fields parallel one another in image and content. The surrounding frames reference patterns from various Sicilian artistic traditions. The layering of Italian and English languages is a means of resolution between the iconic collective conscious and the experience of the present.
